Tens of thousands of opposition supporters have attended a rally in Kuala Lumpur to protest against the results of last weekend's Malaysian election.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim called on Malaysians to join in a nationwide protest tour to their anger against the election result, which saw the ruling Barisan Nasional party extend its 56-year grip on power.

The opposition claims the election was fraudulent and says it is considering court action in up to 30 seats.

The rally was held at a sports stadium which is designed to hold 40,000 people, but at least twice that number attended, with huge crowds spilling out into nearby areas.

In the rain, the black-clad protesters heard speaker after speaker claim the election was won through fraud, including the use of phantom voters and foreign voters.

The government says the opposition, specifically Mr Anwar, is fomenting dissent and misleading voters by hunting for instances of alleged malpractice.

Despite initial warnings that those attending would be arrested, there was no police presence.

Mr Anwar called on opposition supporters to mourn the election result by wearing black this weekend and foreshadowed similar rallies around the country.

"We will go to every nook and corner of this country to show that we have the vote of the Malaysians," he said.

He also asked opposition supporters everywhere to wear black again on Saturday to mourn democracy.

  1. Kepada YB. Perdana Menteri Dato' Sri Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak,

    Sekian, Terima kasih
